Second quarter saw historically high load volumes matched by recovering equipment capacity
TORONTO – TransCore Link Logistics Canadian load volumes ended the first half of the year with impressive performance. Year-to-date, load volumes increased a significant 33 percent from the last half of 2017 and 43 percent compared to the first half of 2017. These results signal a substantial increase in 2018 load volumes compared to any previous year on record.
Second Quarter Load Performance
Load volumes in the second quarter declined 18 percent compared to the record-breaking first quarter of 2018, but increased 24 percent compared to the second quarter of 2017.
Compared to last month, the number of loads posted on Loadlink in June remained relatively flat. June volumes decreased one percent month-over-month, but year-over-year, volumes were 12 percent higher than those recorded in June 2017.
Other quarterly highlights
- Load volumes in Q2 2018 were the second highest ever recorded by Loadlink, behind only Q1 2018
- Load volumes remained relatively flat during Q2 2018, with a net zero percent change over the three months
- Following the trend ending in Q1, truck postings surged upwards in Q2, returning to levels last seen in 2017
Intra-Canada loads accounted for 26 percent of the total volumes and amounted to a 19 percent increase year-over-year.
Cross-border load postings represented 72 percent of the data submitted by Loadlink users:
- Loads leaving Canada to the United States increased 12 percent year-over-year, and
- Loads entering Canada increased 11 percent year-over-year.
June’s equipment postings decreased six percent when compared to May 2018 and seven percent when compared to June 2017. Even so, equipment capacity increased 35 percent in Q2 2018 when compared to Q1 2018.
Truck volumes continued to rise amidst high, yet steady load volumes. A small dip in both equipment and load postings caused the truck-to-load ratio to decrease slightly, but remained over one truck available per every load. The number of trucks posted on Loadlink was 1.45 for every one load posted on the network, compared to 1.52 in May. Year-over-year, the ratio continued to tighten from 1.75 in June 2017.
